Words That Start With M

M pulls more weight than most letters. This dictionary holds 9,628 words beginning with M out of 172,823 total, one of the deeper sections of the alphabet, and the tile pays a solid three points in Scrabble and four in Words With Friends. Depth plus a mid value tile means an M rack almost always has a real play hiding in it, and this page exists to surface that play fast.

Seven small doors

M opens seven two letter words: ma, me, mi, mm, mo, mu, and my. Two of them dodge ordinary vowels entirely, mm with no vowel at all and my with only its Y, which makes them premium rack cleaners on a consonant heavy turn. Mu, the Greek letter, is the one players most often forget, so it wins games quietly.

The muzzy tier

The Z words rule the M section. Muzzy is the best five letter M word at 28 points, mezzo brings 25, and mazy tops the four letter group at 18. One step longer, muzjik, a borrowed Russian word for a peasant farmer, also hits 28, and at seven letters mezuzah and muzzily each reach 30, serious totals before any multiplier or bingo bonus. None of these are obscure to the dictionary, only to opponents, which is exactly what you want.

M words length by length

Eight letters is the summit: 1,472 entries make it the largest single M group, and 1,228 seven letter words feed full rack bingo hunts. Daily puzzle players can work from 444 five letter words, with money, moist, mirth, mango, and mauve covering very different vowel patterns. At the extreme end the M list ties itself: microelectrophoretically and microspectrophotometries both run twenty four letters, the joint longest M entries in the dictionary.
