Word finders for every length

Racks of four, six, and seven tiles decide more games than any other size. Compare this page with the 6 Letter Word Finder and the 7 Letter Word Finder .

Midgame racks rarely cooperate. You are holding something like J, A, Z, E plus assorted junk, the premium squares are two rows away, and the clock is moving. Type those letters into the finder above and the answer comes back immediately: JAZZ if a blank can cover the second Z, HAZE or JEEZ for quick points, or a quiet ZEAL that resets your rack. The search covers all 3,903 four letter words in the ENABLE list and sorts them by score, so the strongest available play sits at the top.

Why four letters is the workhorse length

Four letter words are long enough to reach bonus squares and short enough to fit almost anywhere on a crowded board. The tier also carries serious firepower. JAZZ pays 29 points on plain squares, FIZZ and FUZZ pay 25, BUZZ 24, QUIZ and RAZZ 22 each, with HAJJ at 21 and JEEZ at 20 rounding out the heavy hitters. Even without a premium tile in sight, words like JINX, ONYX, ORYX, and QUAY convert awkward racks into respectable turns, and friendly staples like ZERO, ZINC, and WAXY come up constantly.

Getting more out of the finder

Hold a blank? Add a question mark for each one, up to three. Results mark how many blanks each word requires and score those letters at zero, exactly as the game does. If you play Words With Friends rather than Scrabble, switch the scoring system and watch the list reorder: the two games disagree about many letters, so the best play in one is sometimes second best in the other.

One more habit worth building: before you commit to a play, scan the results for words that share three of your four letters. If two candidates score alike, keep the tile that combines well next turn, usually an S, an E, or an R, and play the one that spends your dead weight.

Every count on this page is derived from the dictionary at build time, never typed by hand. If a word you expected is missing from the results, the dictionary page explains which list we use and why we chose it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a four letter word I use all the time missing here?
ENABLE, the public domain list this site is built on, excludes proper nouns, abbreviations, and some newer slang, so plenty of everyday strings are absent by design. If a word you expected is not in the results, our /dictionary/ page explains the source list and its rules.
What is the highest scoring four letter word?
JAZZ, at 29 points. There is a catch: Scrabble has a single Z tile, so playing JAZZ in a real game requires a blank standing in for the second Z, and that blank scores zero. The finder accounts for this when you include a question mark in your search.
Does the finder handle blank tiles?
Yes. Type a question mark for each blank, up to three per search. Each result shows whether it needed a blank, and blank letters are scored at zero, exactly as the game scores them.
Why do the scores change when I switch to Words With Friends?
The two games assign different values to many letters. B and C, worth 3 in Scrabble, are worth 4 in Words With Friends, while other tiles move in the opposite direction. The finder recalculates every word with the correct table, so the ranking can genuinely reorder.
