Two letter words win close games. They let you dump a bad tile, block a dangerous lane, and score in two directions at once when you play parallel to a word already on the board. The finder above searches all 96 two letter words in the ENABLE list the moment you type, so enter the rack you are staring at and see every legal short play before your turn clock runs down.

A list you can actually memorize

Every other length is too big to hold in your head. Three letter words already number 972, and the full dictionary runs 172,823 entries. The two letter tier is the one exception, and strong players treat it as required reading. Start with the vowel pairs AA, AE, AI, and OE, which turn a rack full of vowels from a lost turn into a small score. Then add the 16 entries that open with A, from AA to AY, and the rest of the list follows quickly.

The nine point club

AX, EX, OX, XI, XU, and JO are the payday plays, each worth nine points in Scrabble before any bonus squares. XI is a Greek letter, XU is a Vietnamese coin, and JO is a Scottish sweetheart. Placed on a double or triple letter square, the X alone can outscore an average five tile play. If your rack holds an X and the board is tight, one of these six is usually the answer.

Vowel dumps and consonant escapes

The list also bails you out when you have no vowels at all. HM, MM, and SH are legal, and BY and MY put a heavy Y to work. If you hold a blank tile, type a question mark in the finder and it stands in for any letter, up to three per search. Blanks score zero, so spend them on placement, not on letter value.

One honest note about coverage. ENABLE is a public domain list, and it is stricter than some newer tournament dictionaries: QI, ZA, and OI, familiar from other apps, are not in it, which is why they never appear here. Every count on this page is computed from the list itself when the site is built, and the dictionary page explains the source in full.

Why is QI missing from this two letter word list?
This site uses ENABLE, a public domain word list, and QI, ZA, and OI were added to tournament dictionaries after ENABLE was compiled. If your app accepts them, it is checking a different lexicon. Our /dictionary/ page documents exactly which list we use, its license, and its full counts by length.
What are the best two letter words when I have an X?
AX, EX, OX, XI, and XU all use the X and score nine points on plain squares. Look for a double or triple letter square first, because multiplying the X is the cheapest big score in the game.
How does the question mark work in this finder?
A question mark stands for a blank tile. Type it alongside your letters and the finder treats it as any letter of the alphabet, up to three per search. Results show which words needed a blank, and blanks contribute zero points to the score, just as they do in the game.
Are HM and SH really legal words?
Yes. ENABLE includes a small set of vowel free interjections, including HM, MM, and SH. They are lifesavers when your rack is all consonants and you need to score without opening up the board.
