Words That Start With A to Z

Pick a letter to open its full word list. Every count below is computed from the same 264,179 word YAWL dictionary that powers the Word Finder, so the numbers on each page always match what the filter finds.

This is the index for every first letter list on the site. Pick a letter below and you land on a filterable, sortable list of every word that starts with it, drawn from the 264,179 entries in the YAWL dictionary. The counts next to each letter are not estimates. They are computed from the word list itself each time the site is built, so the number you click is exactly the number of words you will find.

The heavyweights and the rare tail

The alphabet is lopsided. S opens 29,969 words, more than the six rarest starting letters put together, which is why S hooks are the most contested squares on a Scrabble board. C and P follow with 23,808 and 23,338 words each. Down at the other end, X starts just 304 words, Z only 1,113, and Y 937. Scarcity cuts both ways: those pages are short enough to actually study, and knowing a play like XU or ZEE can win a tight endgame.

The strange case of Q

Q sits near the bottom with 1,342 words, and nearly all of them lean on a U. The exceptions are worth learning by heart: QAT, QOPH, QANAT, and QWERTY all appear in the dictionary and all rescue a Q when no U ever comes. The Q page is one of the shortest on the site, which makes it one of the most learnable.

How players actually use these pages

A first letter list earns its keep mid game. Wordle gave you a green opening letter, so you browse that letter at five letters long. A crossword clue starts with V and you need seven letters, so you open V and filter. A teacher building a spelling unit on W words can pull real examples with real counts instead of guessing. Each page also feeds your letters into the word finder on the home page when you want anagram style matching instead of browsing.

Counts and lists all trace back to one pinned dictionary file, described in full on the dictionary page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which letter starts the most words?
S leads by a wide margin with 29,969 words, more than J, K, Q, X, Y, and Z manage combined. C is the runner up at 23,808, helped by the huge families of com and con words, and P takes third with 23,338.
Which letter starts the fewest words?
X, with only 304 words in the whole dictionary. Most of them are borrowed science and history terms like XENON, XYLEM, and XEBEC, a small Mediterranean sailing ship. Z and Y are the next scarcest, so short words from those pages tend to surprise opponents.
Why do these counts differ from other word sites?
Every site counts whatever dictionary it runs on, and dictionaries disagree. Our lists are built from YAWL, an open list made for word games, and each count is recomputed from that file every time the site is built. The dictionary page explains the choice and shows the full letter by letter table.
Do the lists include plurals and verb forms?
Yes. YAWL lists inflected forms as separate entries, so CAT and CATS both count, and so do PLAY, PLAYS, PLAYED, and PLAYING. That is the right behavior for word games, where each of those is a separate legal play.
